Virginia tax FAQs

When are Virginia individual returns due in 2027?

Virginia returns are normally due May 1. In 2027, May 1 falls on a Saturday, so the due date is Monday, May 3, 2027.

Does Virginia have an automatic extension?

Yes. Individuals get an automatic six-month extension to file, to November 1, 2027 for 2026 returns. You don’t need to file a form, but at least 90% of your tax must be paid by the original due date to avoid an extension penalty.

I live in Virginia but work in DC or Maryland. Where do I pay tax?

It depends on the rules for each jurisdiction and where your employer withholds. This is a common situation in Loudoun County, and we make sure the right state gets the right tax.
